America Turns 250. We’re Celebrating It From a Hammock.
The Fourth of July, the slow way — on a working farm in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Somewhere this weekend, a lot of people are going to be sitting in traffic on the way to a crowded beach, paying for parking they reserved in April, and hunting for a patch of sand within earshot of somebody else’s Bluetooth speaker. That’s one way to spend the Fourth (no hate on it, I love a good beach day!).
Here’s the other way. You pull down our gravel drive, the goats come out to greet you, Ollie the donkey brays like he’s been expecting you specifically, and the loudest thing you hear all weekend is a rooster who has strong opinions about 6 a.m. There’s a flag on the porch and a hammock with your name on it.
And this year the timing is something special. Because 2026 isn’t just another Fourth — it’s America’s 250th birthday.
The country turns 250 — here’s what that means
July 4, 2026 marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence — the Semiquincentennial, if you want the fancy word for it. It’s the kind of anniversary that comes around, well, once every two and a half centuries, and the whole country is leaning in.
Cities all over the map are throwing everything they’ve got at it. There are tall ships sailing into New York Harbor for the largest maritime gathering in the nation’s history, a star-spangled concert on the National Mall, traveling “Freedom Truck” museums rolling through all 48 contiguous states, and monuments lit red, white, and blue from July 2 through 5. There’s even a nationwide “America’s Potluck” on July 5 — communities across the country sitting down to a shared meal on the same weekend. (More on that in a minute, because it’s very on-brand for us.)
And here’s the part we love: Charleston — just 60 minutes down the road from our front gate — is one of only four cities in the whole country chosen to host the nation’s official 250th festivities, alongside Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. South Carolina was picked for its front-row seat to the American Revolution, with battle reenactments and anniversary events on the calendar. Two hundred and fifty years of American history, and a big chunk of it happened right here in the Lowcountry.
You don’t have to drive to a capital city to feel it, though. You can feel it just fine from a rocking chair with a cold drink, watching the sun go down over the pasture.
The Fourth of July around Santee & Lake Marion
We’re tucked into Santee Cooper Country, near Lake Marion, and the small towns out here do the Fourth the way small towns should — homemade, friendly, and close enough that you’re back on the farm before the smoke clears.
Here’s what’s happening near us:
Fireworks in Elloree. Our neighbors over in Elloree (about 15 minutes away) host their Independence Day celebration at Joe Miller Park, with fireworks at dusk and food and drinks for sale. Bring cash. There’s also a family movie night in the park the night before if you’re rolling in early. It’s the kind of hometown fireworks show where you’ll end up chatting with the family on the blanket next to you.
The lake itself. Lake Marion is the biggest lake in South Carolina, and the Fourth on the water is a whole tradition out here — folks out on boats, little displays popping off over the water at dusk. If you’ve never watched fireworks reflect off a still lake, put it on the list.
Charleston, if you want the big show. an hour east, the Holy City goes all out for the Fourth in a normal year — and this is not a normal year. If you want to fold a day of 250th history into your trip, it’s an easy drive.

For the first time in 32 years, the World Cup is being played on American soil — and it happens to land right on our doorstep this holiday weekend, with knockout-round matches on the Fourth itself. 🍽️ The Farm Potluck & Cookout
The whole country is doing “America’s Potluck” this weekend, and honestly, we were doing potlucks before it was a national event. Bring a dish, meet your neighbors for the weekend, and settle in for a proper cookout under the oaks. This is the heart of a stay here — strangers at the start of the meal, friends by the end of it. (Cookout kicks off Saturday at 6pm. We’ll handle hamburgers & hotdogs; you bring a dish to share if you’re able.)

You don’t have to figure out the logistics — we’ll point you to the best nearby fireworks (see Elloree, above), tell you when to leave, and have the fire pit going and the s’mores ready for when you get back. Or skip the crowds entirely, stay put, and let the sky over the pasture do its thing while you count stars. Out here, on a clear night, there are a lot of them.
